Royal Mail plans for 16,000 redundancies
It has been revealed that secret plans by the Royal Mail could see up to 16,000 jobs at the company under threat in the short term. The revelations, so far denied by directors of the Royal Mail, show an overall intention to save approaching £500 million from the company's cost base. Many consider the government's plans to sell off part of Royal Mail and revelation about 16,000 potential job losses could trigger the same kind of backlash we saw last week with regard to foreign workers in the UK.
If these secret plans are correct then it looks as though the UK government and the Royal Mail have been plotting behind the scenes to substantially reduce the company's workforce with many suggesting the company is ripe for a flotation on the stock market in due course. This will allow the Treasury to raise a substantial amount of money which could then be used to pay down the growing government debt or be reinvested into UK public services or the economy.
While the relationship between the unions and the Labour government has been stretched for some time, many believe the "secret plans" with regards to the Royal Mail could be one step too far. At a time when the banking sector appears to have access to a bottomless pit of taxpayer funding, companies such as the Royal mail are left to their own devices.
