Is Aer Lingus In Trouble?
As the airline industry continues to digest the news that Zoom is now grounded forever it seems that Aer Lingus may well be in trouble as well. Reporting a £17.9 million loss for the first half of the company's financial year Chief Executive Dermot Mannion was blunt in his assessment of the situation - change is needed and it is needed now!
The fact that Dermot Mannion is forecasting more pressure for companies such as Aer Lingus, even though the price of oil has fallen of late, does not bode well for the future of the industry. At best he has suggested the company will break even in the second half of the financial year and report a full loss overall, something which is sure to put pressure on the balance sheet of Aer Lingus.
Competition seems to be building in the sector with many airlines literally fighting for every penny they can find and making the situation worse for the airline industry as a whole. However, with the consumer looking for cheaper and cheaper fares and airlines looking for income at any expense we literally have a doomsday scenario for those who do not react now. Thankfully Aer Lingus seem to appreciate the major problems ahead and is already making plans - but will others follow?
