Cadbury law would have been irrelevant
Today's release of the Labour Party manifesto includes the so-called "Cadbury law" which the government has been putting forward as a means of stopping recognised UK companies, utilities and infrastructure companies from being taken over by overseas competitors. However, it looks as though the so-called "Cadbury law" has been watered down somewhat and will only take in utility companies and infrastructure companies vital to the UK economy and the UK population.
So while all of the headlines at the weekend suggested that the Labour Party was looking to protect UK plc this is no longer the case although as with any run-up to a general election the headlines have already been grabbed. Time after time we have seen many government policies leaked to the press grabbing headlines which suggest very different powers to those confirmed when the policies are officially released. This has been a major problem for Gordon Brown with spin often placed before substance, something which could come back to haunt him as voters go to the polls.
It will be interesting to see how the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrat party attempt to grab the attention of the UK voters later in the week with their own manifestos due to be released.
