Bad spending habits and budgeting tips- entertainment and leisure

17/08/2015

It’s always nice to be in a position where you have a little bit of free time and have some money to spend in it. You may have a regular hobby you enjoy, like going to the theatre or watching live sport, or you might enjoy trying different things with your family.

Whatever you like to do in your free time, there are many bad spending habits people fall into when enjoying themselves, and fall into the trap of paying over the odds for entertainment. Are you guilty of any of them?

Bad spending habit one- paying for things you don’t use

When was the last time you had a look at your incomings and outgoings? I checked mine recently and realised I was still paying £25 for a gym I never went to, £7.50 a month for insurance on a phone I no longer have and £5 for an online magazine subscription I never use. All these things had simply slipped my mind, and I have continued to pay for them each month via Direct Debit.

I cancelled these subscriptions, and have not missed them at all. Just a quick look online at my bank account managed to save me money per month, without really sacrificing or losing anything. Do you have any direct debit you’ve long forgotten about? Have a look at your outgoings and try and figure out where you could be saving money on unnecessary Direct Debits, and you may be surprised how much you could save.

When setting up a Direct Debit in the future, make sure it is for something you won’t just forget about and try to remember to look at your spends once in a while to check if there is anything you could cut down on.

Bad spending habit two- not taking advantage of discount cards and offers

Many people like to spend their spare time going out for something to eat, going to the cinema or planning fun activities with the kids. Although fun and entertaining, these can often be very expensive pursuits.

If you are the type to shun cooking a slap up meal, you might save money by getting a Tastecard or a Gourmet Society card. These cards can entitle you to 50% off food, 241 mains or 25% off your total bill in hundreds of restaurants throughout the UK. A Tastecard membership costs around £80, and to join the Gourmet Society costs around £70. It’s not cheap, so may not be for you if going for dinner is only a very occasional treat, but if you go to certain places often or really do like to have meals out regularly, it can save you much more. Research each card and see which one would suit your needs better, and then happy dining!

If you are a cinephile, there are certain offers and discounts you may benefit from taking advantage of. If you are in the process of purchasing insurance of some sort, be it car, holiday, home or other, getting it through through Compare the Market will entitle you to 241 cinema tickets each Wednesday and Thursday with Meerkat Movies. (Always make sure you shop around for insurance first though- you don’t want to spend extra just to get Meerkat Movies.)

Special packs of revels, M&M’s, Maltesers and more offer a “free” Sunday cinema ticket when you buy four small or two large packs. Might be worth taking advantage of if you like your sweets!

If you really love the cinema and live by a Cineworld, it might be worth paying for their unlimited service. This means you pay £16.40 a month and can see as many films as you want. Considering the cinema can now costs upwards of £9 per visit, this could really be for you if you go more than twice a month.

Bad spending habit three- paying full price for days out

Planning a fun and rewarding day out for the whole family can often be a time consuming and costly business. Theme parks, zoos and historical monuments can sometimes charge over the odds, but there are ways you can work around this.

There are a wide variety of discount vouchers for some of the UK’s best attractions. Kellogg’s are currently running a promotion offering a “grown ups go free” voucher for 28 UK attractions, including Alton Towers, Legoland and Sea life Centre. You must buy one full price ticket, adult or child, to get the free ticket.

Many places offer discounts if you book online or in advance, so make sure you plan your days out and don’t leave everything to the last minuet. Also, check out voucher websites like Groupon At the moment, they have great offers on quad biking, tickets to the zoo and theme park entries.

There are so many great ways to save money when it comes to leisure and entertainment. Discounts, special offers and advanced books can help families save loads of money throughout the year. It’s always worth checking out voucher codes and discounts online before you go, and planning things in advance usually saves money and time.
