Did Mervyn King sneak in for a chat with Alistair Darling?
The last few months has seen some seriously strange rumours circulating around Parliament although the latest would appear to have some credence with the suggestion that Mervyn King has had a secret meeting with Alistair Darling to discuss the economy and the forthcoming budget. While this is as yet unconfirmed, there is a feeling that Gordon Brown is being taken out of the loop and Alistair Darling is taking full charge of the forthcoming budget.
It is also quite incidental that rumours of a meeting between Mervyn King and Alistair Darling came at a time when Mervyn King announced a wholly unexpected personal attack on Gordon Brown and the UK government. Conspiracy theorists suggest that the two are working together to try and squeeze Gordon Brown out of the picture and force him to accept their proposals for the forthcoming budget and any future rescue plans and fiscal stimulus programs.
In many ways both Alistair Darling and Mervyn King both have very little to lose as rumours would suggest they are both on borrowed time with Gordon Brown almost certain to enact a clear out as and when it is safe to do so. However, when you consider the recent gilt auction failure, criticism from the EU and the suggestion that Gordon Brown's Chancellor of the Exchequer is working with the Bank of England, the PM really is under serious pressure.
