Could the Liberal Democrat party hold the balance at the next general election?

The Liberal Democrat party has been very vocal over the weekend with regards to a readjustment of the UK tax allowance system and tightening of various loopholes. They have pledged, if they are voted into power, to increase income for those at the bottom end of the UK pay scale to the tune of £700 a year. By closing the loopholes and taxing those on higher incomes the Liberal Democrat party believe they can fund a substantial increase in income for those at the lower end of the spectrum.

While the chances of the Liberal Democrat party gaining power in the UK seem slim, to say the least, in the short term, there is a possibility they could hold power in a "hung parliament". This would see the party dictating certain actions and certain policies of their chosen "partner" whoever that may be. So in a rather bizarre turnaround, although it does not seem likely at this moment in time, if the opinion polls narrow then the Liberal Democrats could easily come into play.

With rumours that the party has already discussed a possible merger with the Labour Party in the past, it would seem highly unlikely that Nick Clegg would be willing to "jump into bed" with the Conservative party.
