UK swine flu danger level increased

After reports that the two suspected swine flu outbreaks in Scotland have been confirmed the UK government has moved the danger level in the UK significantly higher. While there are no reasons for significant alarm the fact that swine flu has officially entered the UK, with a further suspected case in Manchester, is causing unrest amongst scientists and the government.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has also raised the official alert level from 3 to 4 which is just two steps short of a full pandemic. While there are treatments available across the world for those infected by the virus, there are concerns that if the virus does turn into a pandemic there will not be sufficient dosages available to cover everybody. As we touched on in one of our earlier post, the threat from the virus has hit stock markets around the world and seen a number of governments introducing transport restrictions in and out of various countries.

The general advice for Mexico is not travel to the country, which has been at the centre of this ongoing outbreak, unless absolutely necessary. Those who do travel to Mexico will witness the worrying sight of facemasks been worn by literally millions of people in the country as the government looks to contain the outbreak and eventually regain control.
