Gordon Brown thrown a European lifeline
While the European elections will still be a disaster for the Labour Party, it does appear that the Labour vote is holding up better than many had expected. While we await the official results it is rumoured that the government of the day has managed to secure enough votes to stay ahead of the Liberal Democrats and the UKIP in European elections although yet again the Conservative party will be the victor of the day.
Many people expect this to finally put an end to the ongoing revolt amongst Labour backbenchers and the attempt to dethrone Gordon Brown from office. It will be interesting to see how the opinion polls sway over the next few days as Gordon Brown appears to have been holed below the waterline and many see him as a "dead man standing". If he can fight back from this particular situation then he will go down as one of the great prime ministers in UK living history although many believe he will drag down his party with him.
If nothing else, the last few days has shown that Gordon Brown has the determination to continue in the face of growing anger amongst Labour party voters and UK voters in general. Whether he will be able to turn round this growing anger before the next general election very much remains to be seen.
