British Airways looking for a deal with Unions

British Airways is locked in talks with the Unite union as the subject of pay reviews and redundancies comes more to the fore. Despite the fact that nearly 1000 people agreed to work up to one month a year for no pay, it seems as though British Airways is going to push for more significant cost savings. Amid a suggestion that the company is losing £3 million a day the likes of Willie Walsh, BA's chief executive, is looking for substantial cost saving initiatives from the Unite union.

Many people feel they were tricked into agreeing to work extra hours for no money amid signs that massive redundancy numbers may be forced through by the management. There is a serious disagreement as to whether the current downturn in the UK airline industry is permanent or temporary with the two parties at opposite ends of the spectrum. There is no doubt that British Airways, like so many other airlines around the world, is struggling at the moment to make ends meet but whether this is a long-term change in the business environment remains to be seen.

The tussle between British Airways and the unions may well have a significant impact on future working issues in the UK as many other companies around the country look on with great interest.
