Scottish Executive receives lukewarm response from Diageo
The closure of various Diageo operations in Scotland, with the potential loss of up to 900 jobs, has been a hot topic in Scotland for some time now. After the company initially announced a restructuring of its Scottish operation the Scottish Executive and the unions were up in arms and have been involved in various demonstrations against the move.
While Diageo has been willing to talk to the Scottish executive regarding its plans for the future the ruling SNP party has today put forward a number of proposals to save the 900 jobs at risk although this has received something of a lukewarm response from the company. Despite the fact that Diageo is coming under immense pressure from the Scottish unions and the Scottish Executive, Paul Walsh, the company's chief executive, today reiterated the company's commitment to restructuring its worldwide operations. This is a significant blow for the Scottish Executive and while no announcement has been made regarding the various proposals made, it does not look good at this moment in time.
The ongoing protests against Diageo, a company which still employs a significant amount of people in Scotland, have in the view of many gone too far and now put at risk the company's long-term relationship with Scotland and the Scottish Executive. Despite the fact that Diageo explained its decision to restructure its Scottish operations it appears as though various parties in Scotland have a political drum to bang and are not listening.
