Twitter is costing UK businesses £1.38 billion a year

As social networking sites become ever more popular in the UK, and across the world, a report today has suggested that Twitter is costing UK businesses £1.38 billion a year in lost time. The report by IT services group Morse confirmed that 57% of those surveyed did use social networking sites for personal reasons in work time. While the average weekly use of sites such as Twitter is just 40 minutes, there are some exceptions to the rule with many staff known to spend up to 1 hour a day on sites such as Twitter.

This will come as a surprise to many people who may well have been caught out by their own company's website usage rules, but 76% of employers in the UK do not appear to have informed their staff of particular guidelines or restrictions. As a consequence, despite the fact that social network sites are costing UK business literally billions of pounds a year, there will need to be a re-write of company regulations before they can begin to attack personal use of the Internet in work time.

There are also security risks associated with excessive online use in the workplace which we are all aware of but which some of us choose to ignore.
