Is the rise in unemployment coming to an end?

Amid signs that the UK economy may well be starting to move ahead again, figures released by the government today show that unemployment is rising at the lowest rate of increase for 18 months. The number of people unemployed in the UK rose by 30,000 last month bringing the total to just under 2.5 million, significantly less than analyst's expectations. So what is happening to the UK economy?

The rate of unemployment in the UK is around 7.8% which is lower than 8% which many analysts had already pencilled in for September. Interestingly, the number of people in work in the UK increased by 6,000 in the three months to September, something which would appear to indicate that the worst may be over for the UK economy?

However, after a number of false dawns it will take some time for analyst to believe the figures and to actually believe that the UK economy is back on the growth path. We have been here before too many times and too many people have had their fingers burned by calling the end of the recession when in reality the information available was "unreliable". The next few months are vital for the UK economy as we should hopefully see demand start to increase and the employment market start to firm up.
