Rogue Bosses In The Spotlight

Today sees the launch of the government's latest crack down on rogue bosses, poor working conditions and illegal rates of pay with Employment Relations Minister Pay McFadden set to release a major initiative. The move will be backed up by a £6 million marketing campaign, a telephone support line and greater powers for inspectors to check out workplaces throughout the UK.

While there is no doubt that the Labour laws on minimum wage have been successful in the UK, the ongoing recession has prompted desperate workers to accept desperate working conditions with many unwilling to 'rock the boat'. Whether the hot line to report abuse of the system will be successful remains to be seen but rogue bosses have been put on alert to expect serious repercussions should they continue to exploit the system.

This is just one of a number of schemes to rid the UK of the growing problem of substandard pay and substandard working conditions. Over the last couple of years the problem was thought to be more associated with foreign workers in the UK but the recession has seen this spread into traditional labour markets with great speed.

However, with workers more desperate than ever for a stable income (no matter how low) there are concerns that many will not thank the government for intervening and possibly placing jobs at risk, but what choice have the authorities really got?
