Is this a budget to help Gordon Brown or a budget to help the country?

The UK press is today full of rumours and suggestions as to whether this latest £21 billion gamble by the government is a budget to help Gordon Brown or a budget to help the country. While some of the comments in the press may be a little unfair due to the fact that the government has little option but to follow through on earlier spending promises, by the year 2013 this Labour government would have racked up debts of approaching £500 billion.

There is also an argument to say that as Gordon Brown was Chancellor of the Exchequer in the good times and did not save enough income to cover the bad times we now have the problems of today. There is no doubt that both direct and indirect taxes have increased markedly under Labour and while much of this increased income for the Treasury has been directed at the public services it is debatable as to whether there has been a significant return on investment.

Ultimately if Gordon Brown is to be saved there will need to be an uplift in the UK economy and if this move is successful then both parties will win.
