Is Lord Mandelson behind the euro campaign?
While many in political circles were surprised that Gordon Brown brought back his archenemy Peter Mandelson to the government there has been little in the way of controversy before today. However, there are strong rumours that Peter Mandelson is behind a whispering campaign suggesting that the UK economy would fare better under the euro than a weak sterling. Despite assurances from the government that there are no plans to join the euro there would appear to be some political shenanigans on the cards.
The suggestion that Lord Mandelson is behind the secretive campaign would place him in direct conflict with the Prime Minister and open up a potential chasm between the two. Despite public comments suggesting that they have "buried the hatchet" there is a strong feeling that Gordon Brown brought Lord Mandelson back to the government to take some of the heat off himself.
If Mandelson has been acting against the official policy of the government regarding Europe there could be trouble ahead. Gordon Brown has indirectly indicated that with over 75% of the UK population against joining the euro he would not push through such a move against the wishes of UK voters.
