Is the EU about to pounce on UK regulators?

As Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling continue to discuss the options with regards to the UK regulatory system it has been claimed that EU ministers are looking to take control of London. This has caused great concern in the investment markets where EU meddling in the past has been anything but helpful. So will the UK authorities sit back and let the EU takeover?

The problem for the UK government is the fact that they signed up to various EU legislative changes which give the European Parliament the right to meddle in the running of any European country. Even though it is highly likely that the suspected attack on London will be hidden under the guise of a European wide regulator there is no doubt that London is a target because of its position in the worldwide financial industry. This is one of the U.K.'s leading sectors and one which has attracted significant foreign interest in the UK in general and specifically London.

Any changes to the UK regulatory system will be compared against those in overseas markets with a concern that many leading financial companies will move overseas if they see any long-term benefits away from London.
