Do you check your energy bills online?
While the vast majority of energy companies in the UK will offer a small discount for those who are willing to pay online it is also a useful way to check the current status of your account. As we covered in one of our earlier posts, the energy regulator Ofgem has been looking into the direct debit payment system and the fact that more and more people in the UK have been overpaying their energy bills.
There is no suggestion that energy companies are actually keeping your the payments above and beyond the end of the year, but ultimately they appear happy to have a buffer between what is owed and what is paid into your account and in many cases appear reticent to repay the credits at the end of the year. However, for those who use the online system to monitor their energy use and energy bills it is possible to keep a closer track of what is owed and what has been paid and in many cases you will be able to apply for an interim reimbursement of any credit.
By law the energy companies are not allowed to retain above and beyond what you owe them and you can at any time in the year ask for reimbursement of any credit on your account.
