Summer vets bills could soar
Pet owners will have to spend more on vets bills during the summer than the winter, the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) revealed. The fact that skin problems in animals are more likely to occur during the summertime means that pet owners could have to get vaccinations for their furry friends, particularly if they plan on putting them into a cattery or kennel while they go on holiday. BSAVA spokesperson, Mark Johnston, said that although the innoculations are not expensive in themselves, they are not covered by pet insurance and if an animal has a long-term complaint, vets bills could add up.Mr Johnston said: "We are busier during the summer rather than during the winter for two prime reasons. One is that we do a lot of vaccinating because a lot of people are taking their dogs to kennels and cats to catteries. And secondly, there is probably an increase in skin problems. "Skin problems vary. Most of them are hot spots and things like that which are not that expensive to treat, but a small percentage of them could be long-term skin problems and therefore costs do build up over a long period of time."
