Providers plot water price rises

Water prices are to increase above inflation, suppliers indicated today.New income and expenditure proposals from United Utilities, Northumbrian Water, Welsh Water and Thames Water have been received by the watchdog Ofwat for approval, the BBC reports.Thames is proposing three per cent above inflation price rises over the next five years, while Northumbrian and United Utilities are plotting bill hikes of 1.3 and 2.7 per cent.Welsh Water, meanwhile, proposes above-inflation increases from 2010.Justifying the firm's report in an interview with BBC Radio 4, Peter Antolik at Thames said that the firm would be spending £6.5 billion on infrastructure updates over the period."We also have, it should be remembered, a growing population in London and the south east," he added. "About 380,000 more people [are] coming in to the region and we have to make sure that our infrastructure, our networks, our treatment works are all ready to cope with that influx of people."
