Broadband Is Still A Growing Market
Figures released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that broadband use in the UK is hitting record levels with 56% of households using broadband against 51% last year. It seems that the sector is still very much in demand even though the financial climate in the UK has taken a turn for the worst.
While the increase could be claimed to be a little misleading because of the fact that many internet service providers have stopped their dial up services, there is still great demand for broadband speeds and new broadband technology. Competition in the sector has also seen prices come under pressure, speeds increase and more companies offer to bulk together services such as TV, telephone and broadband. Competition for the broadband providers has never been as intense as it is today but once the providers have nabbed you, will we see costs start to increase?
The key to the future pricing structure of the UK broadband industry is British Telecom and the price it is allowed to charge broadband service providers. BT recently requested permission to increase wholesale broadband prices in exchange for additional investment in a fibre optic network and is awaiting a response from OFCOM.
