Is Gordon Brown about to get his way with British Energy?
News that French energy giant EDF is back in talks with British Energy about a takeover may finally see Gordon Brown able to push through his wishes - even though they are against those expressed by some of the group's largest shareholders. If a deal can be reached it would reduce the immediate liability the government would have towards funding the UK's nuclear program and also give it a £4 billion shot in the arm for its 35% stake in the group.
While nothing has been officially announced it is common knowledge that the groups are edging towards a deal but one which some fear will give EDF too much power in the UK. Is it just a coincidence that the British Energy talks are going better and the government has dropped plans for a windfall tax on energy companies such as EDF?
Even though that may be a little cynical the timing does seem very strange with the PM apparently tiring of 'short term gimmicks' in favour of long term solutions such as better insulation and energy efficient light bulbs across the UK. Translated this means that no short term funding is required and the next government can find the money to fund the program!
