Zavvi suspends CD, DVD and computer game sales
Retail giant Zavvi has today become the first real victim of the demise of Woolworth's and its CD, DVD and computer game distribution business. Zavvi has today taken the unfortunate step of suspending all CD, DVD and computer game sales from its website due to a supply issue after the demise of the Woolworths. This is a major blow for the company as Christmas is by far and away the most popular time of the year for these products and while margins are down from previous years, they are still very lucrative and attract new customers.
Many will be surprised at the potential knock-on effect the demise of Woolworths will have on the high street in the UK as the distribution business often played second fiddle to the main retail operation. The problem for retailers now is the fact that due to the short timescale between now and Christmas they are unlikely to be able to source sufficient numbers of DVDs, CDs and computer games to fulfil demand.
When you also take into account the potential limited number of games consoles available, this year could be one of the worst years for the gaming industry for some time.
