UK government's renewable energy targets come under severe pressure

The recent announcement of ambitious renewable energy targets for the UK has seen the government under serious pressure after trying to exclude aviation from the equation. It is common knowledge that the aviation industry is one of the largest polluters of the environment and taking this element out of the equation is a very strange move.

As you may expect, the announcement of the government's new renewable energy plans is set to cost the UK taxpayer a substantial amount in the short, medium and longer term. The proposal to move away from traditional gas and electricity supply techniques in the longer term will see energy bills increase by at least £200 a year in the future and place yet more pressure on the UK consumer.

However, while the UK consumer will be expected to pick up the bill for a move away from traditional gas and electricity energy sources the aviation industry seems set to get away scot-free. This is giving mixed signals to many in the UK as over the last few years we have seen a large increase in taxation in the name of the environment against the aviation industry. Quite why the government has decided to go "soft" in the future is very much a point of debate.
