UK Homeowners Feeling Home Alone
A survey by Gocompare.com has shown that more than 3.5 million UK homeowners feel trapped in their own homes with the vast majority unable or unwilling to consider home improvements or moving location. It seems that the economic turmoil sweeping through the UK is starting to affect the thinking and attitude of home owners, something which could be a bad sign for the housing market.
The UK property market is already under pressure with falling transaction numbers, falling prices and a new round of mortgage interest rate rises starting to hit home. This is all before the expected increase in the UK unemployment figures which have historically lagged a slowing economy by some months. There are real concerns about the short to medium term prospects for the UK economy if these factors join together and squeeze business even further.
To be fair to the UK government there is very little more that they can do with many analysts now resigned to the fact that there is no quick fix and the issues dictating the market at the moment will need to ‘work their way through the economy’. How long this will take and how much of an impact it will have on the economy remains to be seen.
