Orange and T-Mobile merger set to receive regulatory approval

Despite the fact there are worldwide concerns about the merger of Orange and T-Mobile in the UK it is believed that European regulators will this week wave through a deal between the two companies. There have been a number of concerns raised regarding not only the mobile telephone market but also the mobile broadband industry which many believe is set for significant growth in the short, medium and longer term.

The combined Orange and T-Mobile operation in the UK is likely to take around 37% of the overall mobile telecom market leaving it well ahead of second placed Vodafone on around 24%. Even though the European regulators are set to approve the deal it is likely that further reservations could be presented in the UK which could potentially delay the deal in the short term. It will be interesting to see how the likes of Vodafone react to this potential deal and whether regulators may also look favourably upon other large mergers or combined groups in the future.

The mobile telecoms market has been one of the success stories of the last 30 years and is set to continue to hit the headlines and touch all areas of business and consumer life with mobile broadband now more readily available than ever before.
