David Cameron sympathetic to Scottish cause
David Cameron has today been in Scotland to visit the ruling SNP party and discuss budgets for the Scottish Parliament and an extension of powers for Scottish MSPs. It is believed that David Cameron indicated millions of pounds of additional funding could be released by the Treasury and indeed there is talk of the Scottish Parliament being given its own income tax powers. So is David Cameron looking to cut Scotland adrift?
While the smiles and handshakes from the SNP and the Conservative party were welcomed by the cameras there is no doubt that there is friction behind the scenes. Alex Salmond has never spoken highly of David Cameron even though David Cameron has attempted to smoke the pipe of peace on a number of occasions. The SNP policy of independence would appear to be foremost in the mind of Alex Salmond and David Cameron is well aware of this. As a consequence, the rumoured increase in funding for Scotland could actually diminish demand for full Scottish independence which has already fallen dramatically over the last few months.
However, as ever in politics, the proof is in the pudding and we are nowhere near the endgame in relation to Scottish taxpayer funding and extended powers for the Scottish Parliament.
