Why is David Cameron punishing the middle classes?

The likely rise in capital gains tax from 18% to anywhere up to 50% is causing major problems for David Cameron and his new government. It is well known that a number of backbench Conservative MPs are growing ever more concerned that the introduction of higher taxes which would effectively punish the middle classes and could alienate the very voters who gave David Cameron the largest share of the popular vote. So why is David Cameron risking the future of his government?

It seems that the Liberal Democrats have attempted to water down Conservative plans to reduce the general rate of tax across the UK. The rise in capital gains tax will be offset by an increase in the initial tax-free income allowance but these will affect people at very different ends of the social and the wealth spectrum. The problem David Cameron has now is that even though there is concern within the party he cannot be seen to flip-flop and change his mind at the drop of a hat. This coalition government needs to be focused, united and ready for the many different challenges ahead.

If David Cameron is able to make himself electable at the next election he will have shown himself to be a real leader!
