Why is the UK taxation system so complicated?
The recent revelation of problems within HM Revenue and Customs and the fact that 6 million people in the UK have either underpaid or overpaid their taxes of late has highlighted the complicated UK taxation system. This is a system which has been added to and added to over the years to create a monster which is complicated and can in some cases be nigh on impossible to understand. So why is the UK taxation system so complicated?
Whatever the reasons, most of them historic, there's no doubt that the coalition government needs to address this problem sooner rather than later. The confidence of UK taxpayers, and indeed UK businesses, has been dented somewhat over the last few months with a number of problems revealed to the public. If the authorities themselves' are not able to understand the system then what hope is there for the vast majority of UK taxpayers who have no experience in this field?
When you also take into account the billions upon billions of pounds which have been spent on HM Revenue and Customs computer systems then it does become a little alarming to say the least. Are the UK authorities really getting value for money with these new systems?
