CBI criticises Scottish government
Ian McMillan, the director of CBI Scotland, has issued a New Year message to the Scottish government citing "disappointing behaviours" by the authorities in Scotland. Despite the fact that Mr McMillan had initially been upbeat about the performance of the Scottish government in the early days of the recession, he believes that now is the time for action not words and there have been mistakes made in the past. Indeed, he claims that the actions of some Holyrood ministers "call into question the sincerity of the support for the economy and business".
This is not the best start to the New Year for the SNP and Alex Salmond with these comments directed towards the Diageo saga, which saw very public criticism from the authorities, the cancellation of the Glasgow airport link and the refusal to even consider continuing with nuclear energy in Scotland. The constant criticism of the UK authorities has also had an impact on the relationship between Scotland and England, something which the CBI and other business leaders have been very critical of.
In the eyes of many people, the SNP is more interested in pushing for an independent Scotland (with millions of pounds spent on campaigns and the ballot) than actually investing into the Scottish economy in the short to medium term. There are serious concerns that the Scottish economy will underperform the rest of the UK in the short to medium term which will severely weaken Scotland's presence in not only the wider UK economy but perhaps the worldwide economy.
