RMT confirms that members will be re-balloted regarding strike action
Bob Crow, leader of the rail workers union, has today confirmed that members will be re-balloted regarding strike action which was recently blocked by the UK high court. While the unions have dismissed claims that the initial vote was in any way "riddled with irregularities" these were concerns that were highlighted by the high court after evidence placed before them by National Rail management.
It will be interesting to see how many union members vote in favor of strike action the second time round because the initial vote was very tight with only a small minority actually voting in favor. Union members can either stand behind their union leaders or perhaps decide that strike action is not the way forward and look to arrange some kind of compromise with the National Rail management to avert what will be a crippling strike for the company, workers and the UK economy as a whole.
The proposed new vote on strike action will be a very interesting event which could actually dictate the future strategy of UK unions in the short to medium term. It could also be a turning point for the UK government which is desperate to avoid damaging strike action in the run-up to the next general election.
