BT and TalkTalk challenge Digital Economy Act

There has been a legal challenge issued by BT and TalkTalk with regards to the Digital Economy Act which was controversially introduced by the previous UK government. There have been growing concerns regarding the new powers passed over to UK courts and the fact that many consumers could inadvertently be caught up in expensive court cases and in some cases have their broadband connections disconnected forever.

There is also a greater emphasis on protecting media content, which has so many years been floating around the Internet relatively unregulated, although again there are many who believe the government has gone "overboard". It will be interesting to see whether a judicial review of the Digital Economy Act will be agreed by the UK government because ultimately the Conservative party was also a supporter of the act when it was pushed through parliament.

As the Internet becomes an ever more integral part of everyday life in the UK, and around the world, there is obviously a need to introduce more regulation but many believe that more regulation will ultimately mean more taxes and more costs for consumers and businesses. When the Internet first hit the headlines the potential impact was missed by many governments and political bodies around the world although it is becoming ever more apparent that the Internet is the future of the business arena.
