Unite union to ballot fuel delivery drivers
In a sign of the times it is been revealed that the Unite union is set to ballot fuel delivery drivers with regards to potential industrial action later in the year. As the oil companies continue to squeeze as much efficiency and cost savings out of their operations it would appear that morale amongst delivery drivers is as low as it has been for up to 15 years.
This is a new angle from the UK unions who have increased instances of industrial action over the last two or three years but are now looking to take it up another "notch". As we have seen in the past, industrial action with regards to fuel in the UK will certainly focus the minds of businesses and consumers and quite literally has the potential to bring the UK to a standstill. Whether or not the unions are using this particular area of the UK economy, vital to businesses and consumers, as a bargaining chip in relation to other industrial action is open to debate.
Whatever happens in the next few months, there is no doubt that the coalition government is looking again to quash the power of the unions which came to life under the Labour Party after the decimation of the movement by Margaret Thatcher back in the 1980s.
