Scottish Council defrauded out of £100,000
South Lanarkshire Council has been conned out of more than £100,000 by fraudsters who posed as one of the council's supplies. It is unclear exactly what happened but the eventual outcome was that the council is more than £100,000 out of pocket and the threat posed by fraudulent activity in the UK is in focus now more than ever.
It is believed that up to 3 million people a year are defrauded in the UK with the average loss put at around £850. However, many people believe that the figure of 3 million victims may well just be the tip of the iceberg with the vast majority of victims embarrassed and unwilling to step forward. As a consequence scammers and fraudsters continue to operate under the radar of many regulatory and law enforcement agencies in the UK.
If you have been the victim of fraudulent activity, whether online or offline, it is vital that you make the authorities aware of the issue. Only by reporting fraudulent activity can the authorities act on behalf of law abiding consumers and businesses in the UK who continue to be targeted by overseas teams posing as an array of different individuals and companies.
