Are we set to see a revival of the Labour left?
Ken Livingstone has returned to the political arena with a suggestion that now is the time for a revival of the left-wing Labour Party. Livingstone has for some time been a thorn in the side of "new Labour" and it now appears as though he has spotted a potential niche in the political arena. Gordon Brown's firm embracement of capitalism in his early years in the Treasury has suddenly made way for an attack on capitalism which has opened him up to cries of hypocrisy.
Whether new Labour will actually be able to win the next election very much remains to be seen but a split Labour Party will not assist the situation. The Tory party will be rubbing their hands with glee in anticipation of a damaging split in the Labour Party which could divide votes.
Gordon Brown has suffered on a number of fronts of late although his handling of the economy over the last 12 months has turned out to be anything but spectacular. While nicknamed "Prudence" in his time at the Treasury he has ditched this tag and has been pouring money into the UK economy at an alarming rate. Promises and forecasts of a recovery have come and gone and each new announcement seems to lose power and influence.
