Is British Airways launching ghost flights?

The ever-growing dispute between the British Airways management and the Unite union has worsened this morning with accusations that British Airways is launching a number of ghost flights. In simple terms these are flights which are either carrying cargo or very light on passenger numbers and predominantly being used to try and sap the will of union activists. British Airways has confirmed that 8 long haul flights and 18 short haul flights have been reinstalled after initial contingency plans to beat the strike were announced.

Interestingly, British Airways, while making much publicity over the reinstatement of various flights, has refused to give exact figures regarding travel data. This has attracted the attention of union leaders who claim that British Airways is literally losing hundreds of thousands of pounds everyday and the strike is starting to hit the company at the bottom line. Whatever the truth about potential ghost flights and how much money British Airways is actually losing, there is no doubt that the strike is costing all parties in different ways.

There have even been calls from the unions for the British Airways board of directors to overrule Willie Walsh, the company's chief executive, and become directly involved in negotiations themselves. Will this divide and conquer manoeuvre be successful?
