UK Government Forced To Redraft Digital Economy Bill

The UK government has been forced into an embarrassing U-turn amid signs that the Digital Economy Bill, which has attracted so much controversy, would have been blocked in Parliament in its current form. This comes despite the fact that the UK government only days ago confirmed plans to rush through the Digital Economy Bill with little or no time for discussion, ahead of the next general election.

Car Scrappage Scheme Ends Today

The popular car scrappage scheme ends today with the last of the 400,000 car allocation set to be utilised. While the scheme has attracted much criticism from some areas of the UK there is no doubt it has been very successful, turning a 30.5% annual decline in car sales into a 57.6% increase over the car scrappage scheme period. The government also estimates that up to 4,000 jobs have been saved due to the increased business levels and activity within the sector.

BSkyB Forced To Cut Cost Of Sport Services

Regulator Ofcom has today stirred something of a hornet's nest after demanding that BSkyB reduce the wholesale cost of premium sports channels which it charges competitors. This comes after a three-year review and the conclusion that BSkyB has allegedly looked to quell competition in the sector by simply keeping the cost of premium sports channels high for competitors. However, BSkyB has refuted these allegations and legal action is pending with regards to the proposed price changes.

British Gas To Introduce Smart Meters

In a move which will ultimately help UK consumers, UK businesses and British Gas it has been revealed that British Gas will fit over 1 million Smart meters in homes across the UK during 2010, creating 2600 new jobs. It has also been revealed that this move will save in excess of £1 billion over the next 10 years, the majority of which should filter through to cuts in gas bills in the years ahead.

Ofcom has announced a new investigation into the UK mobile phone market and the ever-growing cost of connecting to different networks and landlines. It seems that with the exception of British Telecom and the 3 network, the whole UK mobile broadband industry would prefer to maintain a free market with regards to the cost of connecting to different networks across the UK. However, Ofcom has very different ideas!

Holiday Companies Reduce Places Available But Increase Costs

It has been revealed that the UK holiday sector is looking to reduce the number of holiday places available over the next year while at the same time pushing prices higher. Figures from the industry indicate that this year will see around 1 million fewer holiday places available compared to 2 years ago, as the recession continues to bite. This comes despite the fact that many people in the UK are still adamant they will take their annual leave overseas - at whatever price!

Job Applicant Given Six Months Jail For CV Inaccuracies

In what is a lesson to anybody who has embellished their CV and possibly added inaccuracies in the past, it was today revealed that a lady who successfully applied for a post in the NHS was given a six-month jail term after she was found to have lied on her CV. It is believed that a reference said to be from a previous employer, the Royal Navy, was actually a forgery as was a Navy discharge certificate which she also handed over with her CV.

General Electric Plans £99 Million Wind Turbine Plant In UK

The UK government is today a little more relieved with regards to "green issues" in the country with news that General Electric will be opening a new £99 million offshore wind turbine plant in the UK. This comes just hours after Alistair Darling used the budget to highlight the ever-growing importance of "green issues" in the UK and the fact that the UK government needs to attract around £100 billion of investment to meet renewable energy targets by 2020.

Flyglobespan Customers May Receive Just 5% Of Fare Paybacks

PricewaterhouseCoopers, the administrators to the fallen Flyglobespan operation, has today revealed that unsecured creditors may receive just 5% of money owed. Unsecured creditors include paying passengers who were unable to use the service and who did not pay by credit card or debit card. Despite the fact that £34 million has allegedly been held back by credit card clearing group E-Clear there is grave uncertainty as to whether this money, which was allegedly due to Flyglobespan, will ever be received.

Plans For £250 Million Undersea Gas Storage Development

It has been revealed that a £250 million gas storage government is under consideration for a location off the coast of Northern Ireland around 1500 m below sea level. The gas store will be able to hold around 500,000,000 m³ of natural gas and the location is said to be perfect due to the 200 m thick layer of ancient salt above the caverns in question.
